Wednesday in Pentecost,Proper 14: The blessing she had not sought

Opening Sentence
Their sound has gone out into all lands, and their message to the ends of the world. Psalm 19:4

Commemoration: The Virgin Mary
O God, you have taken to yourself the blessed Virgin Mary, mother of your incarnate Son: Grant that we, who have been redeemed by his blood, may share with her the glory of your eternal kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Psalter: Psalm 101, 109

Lessons: Judges 13:15-24Acts 6John 4:1-26

Saviour of sinners! When a poor woman, laden with sins, went out to the well to draw water, she found thee sitting at the well.

She knew thee not; she had not sought thee; her mind was dark; her life was unholy. But thou didst speak to her, thou didst teach her; thou didst show her that her life lay open before thee, and yet thou wast ready to give her that blessing which she had never sought.

Jesus! thou knowest all men. If their minds are dark, their lives unholy, if they have come out seeking thee, not desiring to be taught: deal with them according to the free mercy which thou didst show to her. Speak to them, Lord; bring their sins to their minds, and make them thirst for that salvation which thou art ready to give. Amen.
