Friday after Trinity: Keeping your eyes on Christ

Opening Sentence
The Lord is in his holy temple; let all the earth keep silence before him. Habakkuk 2:20

Collect of the Day
O God, your never-failing providence sets in order all things both in heaven and earth: Put away from us, we entreat you, all hurtful things, and give us those things which are profitable for us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Psalter: Psalm 40, 54

Lesssons: Ecclesiastes 5:1-7, Galatians 3:15-22, Matthew 14:22-36

As long as Peter trusted in Christ, he could navigate the waves and move continually closer to the Lord. When doubts arose, however, he began to sink. So it is with each of us.

The end of our faith is salvation, the fullness of which is union with Christ. It is that perfect relationship toward which we are moving. Faith is required, in order that the seed within us may grow.

As long as our eyes are fixed on Jesus, we can walk by faith even during difficult times. When we are distracted, however, by the wind, the wave, and the storm--life's inevitable obstacles--we lose sight of Christ and begin to go under.
